SpicyIP is sad to report the demise of Sri. N. R. Subbaram, former Controller of Patents and Design and former head Intellectual Property Management Division, CSIR. He passed away on June 27, 2011 after a brief illness.
Subbaram Sir was a noted IPR Consultant with expertise in patent law and policy. He headed the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research's Intellectual Property Management Division for 13 years and played a pivotal role in challenging the turmeric patent and getting it canceled. He had represented India in cases relating to turmeric and neem in the U.S and Europe. He has also authored numerous books on Intellectual Property Rights.
Those close to him vouch for his humility and the guidance he provided both in personal and professional terms. He has undoubtedly made a great contribution to the field of IP and the professionals he worked with and we offer our condolences to his family.

I here this news with deep sorrow. I owe my entry in CSIR as an IPR Co-ordinator in NCL to Mr. Subbaram in 1991. Since then he was a guiding force to me till he retired from his services as Advisor and Head IPMD CSIR. It was my pleasure to work with him in close association as Head of CSIR IPMD simply because of number of patents NCL used to file in his tenure.
I also learnt from Hindu news blog that his wife expired in March this year.
May his and his wife's soul rest in peace.

It is indeed a very sad happening that, we have lost our beloved Sri N.R. Subbaram. As the Director of BGS-ABCRI, we have lot of interactions with him which was always pleasant and very professional. We will sadly miss him in all our IPR efforts. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and may his soul rest in peace.
